Rabeprazole is used to treat conditions where the stomach produces too much acid, including ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Rabeprazole is used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers.

Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) is also known as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) and may be described as a white to yellowish-white solid which dissolves easily in water and in Methanol, Ethanol, Chloroform and Ethyl acetate.

Furthermore, Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) does not dissolve in Ether and N – Hexane and is known to be more stable under alkaline conditions.

Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, or Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) medicine works by blocking acid production in the stomach. It may be used in combination with antibiotics including amoxicillin or clarithromycin to treat certain types of ulcers.

Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) may be used to help in the treatment of patients suffering from swallowing difficulties, persistent insomnia and cancer of the esophagus.

The active ingredient in Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) is rabeprazole sodium, a substituted benzimidazole that inhibits gastric acid secretion.

Healing of Erosive or Ulcerative Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) is indicated in the case of healing and symptomatic relief of erosive or ulcerative gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) for short-term (four to eight weeks) treatment. Patients who have not healed after eight weeks of treatment, an additional eight week course of Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) may be considered, by their health care professional.

Maintenance of Healing of Erosive or Ulcerative Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) is indicated for maintaining a healed effect for the patient and a reduction in relapse rates of heartburn symptoms in patients with erosive or ulcerative Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

Treatment of Symptomatic Gastro esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) is administered to patients for the treatment of daytime and nighttime heartburn and other symptoms associated with GERD in adults and adolescents (twelve years of age and above).

Helicobacter Pylori Eradication to Reduce the Risk of Duodenal Ulcer Recurrence:Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) in combination with Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin as a three drug regimen is indicated for the treatment of patients with H. pylori infection and duodenal ulcer disease.

Treatment of Pathological Hypersecretory Conditions, Including Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome:Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) is also administered for the long – term treatment of Pathological Hypersecretory conditions.
Rabeprazole comes as a delayed-release (long-acting) tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day for 4 to 8 weeks, but it is sometimes taken for a longer time. When taken for ulcers, rabeprazole should be taken after the morning meal. Take the dosage as prescribed by your health care professional.

Aciphex Dosage and Administration:

Note: Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) tablets should be swallowed whole. The tablets should not be chewed, crushed, or split. Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) can be taken with or without food.

Treatment of Symptomatic Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):

Healing of Duodenal Ulcers:An adult oral dose of Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) may be taken once daily for up to a period of four weeks. Most patients with duodenal ulcers heal within four weeks. A few patients may require additional therapy to achieve healing.

Sometimes, Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) may cause headaches, severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, a dry mouth, dizziness, peripheral edema, Cystitis (bladder infection), a hepatic enzyme increase and Arthralgia.

Furthermore, Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) may cause hepatic Encephalopathy, Myalgia, palpitations, vomiting, constipation, nervousness, hepatitis and leg cramps.

Other than the above mentioned, Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) may cause dehydration, insomnia, anxiety, depression, Vertigo (a spinning sensation), Alopecia (hair loss), Tinnitus (ringing of the ears) and Otitis media (middle ear infection).

Lastly, Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) may cause water retention, burping, a loss of appetite, gallstones, anemia, body swellings, sudden weight loss or weight gain and gout.

If you notice any other symptoms which seem severe or persistent, inform your health care professional about the same.
Inform your health care professional if you are allergic to the formulation of this medication and also about any other medication that you may be taking.

Medications metabolized by CPY450:
Aciphex interactions with other drugs. Other drugs that are metabolized by the CYP450 system do not have clinically significant interactions with Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium).

Warfarin:Reports of increased INR in patients have been found, who have received proton pump inhibitors, including Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) and Warfarin concomitantly. Increases in INR and prothrombin time may lead to abnormal bleeding and even death.

Combined Administration with Clarithromycin:A concomitant administration consisting of Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium), Amoxicillin and Clarithromycin resulted in increases in plasma concentrations of Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) and Hydroxy Clarithromycin.

Furthermore, Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) interacts with various other medications, such as, Atazanavir, Nelfinavir, Ampicillin, iron supplements, Clopidogrel, Dasatinib and calcium supplements.
In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

If you are taking this medicine for gastric ulcers or reflux disease, your symptoms should improve within 4 to 8 weeks. If your symptoms do not improve or if they become worse, contact your doctor.

Use of Aciphex in Specific Populations:

Pregnancy:
There has been no revealed evidence of impaired fertility or harm to the fetus due to Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium). There are no adequate and well controlled studies related to interactions between pregnant women and Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium). Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) should be used during pregnancy only if required.

Nursing Mothers:Many drugs are excreted in milk and due to the possibility for adverse reactions to nursing infants from Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium); the patient must discontinue the medicine, during the nursing period.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture.

Re: taking rabeprazole,

Tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to rabeprazole, lansoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (), pantoprazole (Protonix), or any other medications.
tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products you are taking. Be sure to mention any of the following: cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), digoxin (Lanoxin), and ketoconazole (Nizoral). Your doctor may need to change the doses of your medications or monitor you carefully for side effects.
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking rabeprazole, call your doctor.

It is very important for the patient to know that before consuming Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) they must inform their health care professional if they have ever had a history of, or are currently suffering from, abdominal complications, such as, tumors.

Furthermore, it is still unknown whether Aciphex (Rabeprazole Sodium) passes into breast milk or not.
