Risedronate belongs to a class of medication known as Bisphosphonates.

Actonel is a pyridinyl bisphosphonate with the purpose of reduce osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and modulates bone metabolism. This medicine is a bisphosphonate used to prevent and treat osteoporosis that occurs after menopause.

Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) is a fine, white to off – white, odorless, crystalline powder.
Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) is soluble in water and in aqueous solutions, and essentially insoluble in common organic solvents.

Risedronate helps in increasing bone density (making weak bones stronger), in women going through menopause, patients suffering from Pagets` disease of the bone.

Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) helps protect bones from getting fractured easily, by helping to block cells that can make bones fragile.

Each Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) tablet for oral administration contains the equivalent of anhydrous Risedronate sodium in the form of the hemi – pent hydrate with small amounts of monohydrate.

Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) is indicated for the treatment and prevention of vertebral fractures and a composite endpoint of nonvertebral osteoporosis related fractures.

Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) is indicated for treatment to increase bone mass in men.

Risedronate medicine helps control osteoporosis. It is not a cure.
Consult your doctor about the correct diet to follow whilst on a course with this medication.

This medication is to be swallowed whole with a glass of water and works better if you do not have anything for at least 30 minutes to 2 hours after having taken this medicine. Consult your doctor on dosages and take exactly as directed.

If you notice any of the symptoms listed below or any other symptoms which seem severe/persistent contact your doctor immediately.

Sometimes, Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) may also cause diarrhea, acute Iritis, Angioedema, bullous skin reactions, upper gastrointestinal irritation, Esophagitis and gastric ulcers.
Furthermore, Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) may also cause bone or joint pain, acute Uveitis, Osteonecrosis of the jaw, kidney malfunctioning, render the patient unfit to stand or sit upright for more than thirty minutes, chest pain and severe persistent heartburn.
Inform your doctor if you are allergic to the formulation of this medication or any other medication in any other form.

Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) interacts with Iron supplements
Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) interacts with Magnesium supplements
Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) interacts with Parathyroid hormone
Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) interacts with Teriparatide
Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) interacts with Vitamins with minerals.

Inform your doctor about any other medication you may be taking in any other form.
In case of overdose call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed/not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to concieve.

If you concieve whilst on a course with this medication inform your doctor immediately.

Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) therapy is not recommended for use in the case of patients who suffer with severe renal impairment.

Mineral Metabolism: Hypocalcemia and other disturbances of bone and mineral metabolism should be effectively treated before commencing the Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) therapy. Adequate intake of calcium and vitamin D is important in all patients. It is more important for an intake of calcium and vitamin D for patients with Padgett’s disease in whose cases the bone turnover is significantly elevated.
Do not double doses to make up for a missed dose.

Store at room temperature between 20-25 degrees C, away from heat and moisture.
Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had :

Dental/Kidney Disease
Vitamin D Deficiency
Problems Swallowing
Low Blood Calcium
Ulcers

If you notice worsening bone pain inform your doctor immediately.

It is very important for the patient to know that before consuming Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) they must inform their health care professional if they have ever had a history of or are currently suffering from severe renal impairment, Osteonecrosis (serious jawbone complications), blood clotting disorders, Cancer or anemia.

Furthermore, it is still unknown whether Actonel (Risedronate Sodium) passes into breast milk or not.

Consult a pediatrician for the use of this medicine in children.
