Spironolactone, a water pill, is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention caused by various conditions, including heart disease.

Spironolactone causes the kidneys to eliminate unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine.

Spironolactone is also used to treat certain patients with hyperaldosteronism and in certain patients with low potassium levels.

Aldactone (Spironolactone) is a diuretic and is used as an antiandrogen. Aldactone (Spironolactone) is a synthetic drug. Aldactone (Spironolactone) belongs in a class of pharmaceuticals called potassium – sparing diuretics.

Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic used to treat congestive heart failure or high blood pressure. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Aldactone (Spironolactone) is used primarily to treat Ascites in patients with liver disease
Aldactone (Spironolactone) is used primarily to treat Low – renin hypertension
Aldactone (Spironolactone) is used primarily to treat Hypokalemia
Aldactone (Spironolactone) is used primarily to treat Conn`s syndrome

Spironolactone comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken once a day in the morning with breakfast or twice a day with breakfast and lunch.

Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take spironolactone exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

Spironolactone controls high blood pressure but does not cure it. Continue to take spironolactone even if you feel well. Do not stop taking spironolactone without talking to your doctor.

Aldactone (Spironolactone) may even cause Maculopapular or Erythematosus cutaneous eruptions
Aldactone (Spironolactone) may even cause Anaphylactic reactions
Aldactone (Spironolactone) may even cause Mental confusion
Aldactone (Spironolactone) may even cause Cholestatic / Hepatocellular toxicity
Aldactone (Spironolactone) may even cause Renal dysfunction (including renal failure)

If you notice any severe/persistent symptoms inform your health care professional.

ACE inhibitors with Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics may cause severe hyperkalemia
Alcohol, barbiturates, or narcotics with Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics may cause potentiation of orthostatic hypotension
Corticosteroids or ACTH with Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics may cause intensified electrolyte depletion, especially, Hypokalemia
Pressor amines (nor epinephrine) with Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics may cause vascular responsiveness
Tubocurarine with Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics may cause an increased responsiveness to muscle relaxants
Lithium with Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics may cause the renal clearance of Lithium and add a high risk of Lithium toxicity
A combination of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) e.g., Indomethacin with Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics may cause severe hyperkalemia.
Digoxin with Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics has been shown to increase the half – life of Digoxin. As a result there may be an increase in Digoxin serum levels and subsequent digitalis toxicity.

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, weakness, and lightheadedness.

Patients receiving Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics therapy must be placed under observation for evidence of Low serum sodium level
Patients receiving Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics therapy must be placed under observation for evidence of Mild acidosis

Note:Aldactone (Spironolactone) when used on its own, is a weak diuretic, but, can be combined with other diuretics.
The antihypertensive effect of Aldactone (Spironolactone) may exceed the combined effects of other antihypertensive.
Due to the anti – androgen effect of Aldactone (Spironolactone) this medicine may be used to treat Hirsutism.
In male – to – female transsexual and transgender people, Aldactone (Spironolactone) is a common component in hormone therapy.
Aldactone (Spironolactone) is used to treat hair loss and acne in women and may even be used as a topical medication for treatment of male baldness.

Aldactone (Spironolactone) reduces the risk of Alzheimer`s disease
Higher levels of Aldactone (Spironolactone) may be associated with a lower risk of dementia
Aldactone (Spironolactone) tends to promote sodium excretion and potassium retention

Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Spironolactone also is used in combination with other medicines to treat precocious puberty or myasthenia gravis. Spironolactone also may be used to treat certain female patients with abnormal facial hair. Talk to your doctor about the possible risks of using this medicine for your condition.

Keep this medicine in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture.

DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.

DO NOT USE A SALT SUBSTITUTE or potassium supplement without checking with your doctor.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist.

FOR WOMEN: THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine.

Patients receiving Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics therapy must be placed under observation for evidence of Hyponatremia
Patients receiving Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics therapy must be placed under observation for evidence of Hypochloremic Alkalosis
Patients receiving Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics therapy must be placed under observation for evidence of Hyperkalemia
Patients receiving Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics therapy must be placed under observation for evidence of Drowsiness
Patients receiving Aldactone (Spironolactone) diuretics therapy must be placed under observation for evidence of Restlessness
