Antabuse

Disulfiram is used to help treat people with alcohol abuse problems. It is not a cure.

Antabuse (Disulfiram) is a white to off – white, odorless and almost tasteless powder.

Antabuse (Disulfiram) is soluble in water to the extent of about twenty mg in hundred ml.

Antabuse (Disulfiram) is soluble in alcohol to the extent of about three point eight mg in hundred ml.

Contact your paediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children.

This tablet can be swallowed whole with a glass of water or it can be crushed and mixed with a liquid.

Take exactly as directed by your health care professional.

Do not suddenly stop taking disulfiram, unless advised by your health care professional to do so.

A reaction may occur up to 2 weeks after stopping the medication.

Do not take disulfiram within 12 hours of having had alcohol or any alcohol containing beverage.

If you notice any of the symptoms listed below or any other symptoms which seem severe/persistent contact your doctor immediately.

Yellowing of the skin/eyes
Unusual weakness
Vision changes
Skin reaction(s)
Disorientation

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause restlessness

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause acne

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause garlic – like aftertaste in the mouth

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause a loss of appetite

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause nausea

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause vomiting

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause strong stomach pains

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause dark urine

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause multiple cases of Hepatitis

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause Cholestatic and Fulminant Hepatitis

Antabuse (Disulfiram) may even cause the patient to experience Psychotic reactions

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to the formulation of this medication or any other medication in any other form.

Bupropion (Wellbutrin IR/SR/XL, Amfebutamone) interacts with Antabuse (Disulfiram) to cause unpleasant effects on one’s body

Amphetamines (Adderall, Dexedrine, etc.) interacts with Antabuse (Disulfiram) to cause unpleasant effects on one’s body

Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin, etc.) interacts with Antabuse (Disulfiram) to cause unpleasant effects on one’s body

Cocaine interacts with Antabuse (Disulfiram) to cause unpleasant effects on one’s body

Amitriptyline interacts with Antabuse (Disulfiram) to cause unpleasant effects on one’s body

Benzodiazepines interacts with Antabuse (Disulfiram) to cause unpleasant effects on one’s body

Morphine interacts with Antabuse (Disulfiram) to cause unpleasant effects on one’s body

Pethidine interacts with Antabuse (Disulfiram) to cause unpleasant effects on one’s body

Barbiturates interacts with Antabuse (Disulfiram) to cause unpleasant effects on one’s body

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Wear an identification bracelet/necklace with your contact information, name of your medication, identification of your condition and the details of your health care professional/person(s), in case of an emergency.

Inform your doctor if you have or have ever had :

Medicines containing alcohol
Heart/kidney/liver disease(s)
Recent alcohol exposure
Seizures/convulsions
Under-active thyroid
Blood disease
Diabetes

A patient consuming Antabuse (Disulfiram) must be aware of their medical history of Psychiatric problems

A patient consuming Antabuse (Disulfiram) must be aware of the fact that Antabuse (Disulfiram) may tend to cause sweating

A patient consuming Antabuse (Disulfiram) must be aware of the fact that Antabuse (Disulfiram) may tend to cause a pounding heart or palpitations

The patient must exert extra caution as it is still unknown whether Antabuse (Disulfiram) passes into breast milk

Antabuse (Disulfiram) must not be taken for at lest twelve full hours after drinking alcohol.

Antabuse (Disulfiram) must not be consumed if alcohol in any sort of form is being used, such as;

Antabuse (Disulfiram) must be avoided if one drinks Beer

Antabuse (Disulfiram) must be avoided if one drinks Wine

Antabuse (Disulfiram) must be avoided if one uses Aftershave lotions

Antabuse (Disulfiram) must be avoided if one uses a Mouthwash

Antabuse (Disulfiram) must be avoided if one uses Colognes

Antabuse (Disulfiram) must be avoided if one uses Liquid medications

Before consuming Antabuse (Disulfiram) the patient must make sure that labels are read well, including those of nonprescription products.

Before consuming Antabuse (Disulfiram) the patient must make sure that they confirm with their pharmacist about the alcohol content if they are uncertain.

Do not double doses to make up for a missed dose. Consult your health care professional about your missed dose.

Disulfiram is used in the treatment of chronic alcoholism.

Antabuse (Disulfiram) must be used by a patient in combination with supportive therapy and counseling and guidance from one’s trusted health care professional.

Antabuse (Disulfiram) must never be used without a patient`s knowledge.

Antabuse (Disulfiram) is also being studied as to whether it can be used as a treatment for cocaine dependence.

Antabuse (Disulfiram) prevents the breakdown of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter whose release is stimulated by cocaine.

Antabuse (Disulfiram) causes excess dopamine, which results in an increased anxiety level, higher blood pressure, restlessness and other unpleasant symptoms.

Antabuse (Disulfiram) helps the patient by blocking the processing of alcohol in the body.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Store at room temperature between 25 degrees C (77 degrees F) away from heat and moisture.

Avoid inhaling paint fumes and products that contain organic solvents.

Avoid alcohol based toiletries and perfumes.

If you conceive whilst on a course with this medication inform your doctor immediately.

If you need to undergo any kind of surgery, inform your doctor you are taking this medicine.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to conceive.

Do not drink alcohol whilst on a course with this medication and for 2 weeks after you stop taking disulfiram.

Do not treat yourself with OTC medication whilst on a course with this medication, without consulting with your health care professional.
