Augmentin

Augmentin is a combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid. This medication may be described as a penicillin antibiotic, which works by stopping or altogether eradicating the growth of bacteria.

Furthermore, Augmentin is structurally related to penicillin and possesses the ability to deactivate a wide variety of lactamases by blocking the active sites of such enzymes.

Augmentin may be used to treat and relieve symptoms caused by infections of the ear, skin, kidneys, respiratory tract and UTIs, such as lower respiratory tract infections, Otitis Media, sinusitis, skin and skin structure infections and urinary tract infections.

Furthermore, Augmentin may be used to treat and relieve symptoms caused by various infections, such as infections caused by Ampicillin – susceptible organisms, infections of the middle ear, tonsillitis, paranasal sinus infections (inflammation of the air cavities within the passages of the nose), Pneumonia and Gonorrhea.

Augmentin is available in tablet form, which must be taken by mouth and usually every eight or twelve hours, with food. You must be certain to carefully follow the directions on your prescription label and ask your health care professional or pharmacist to explain any part of how to take this medication that you do not understand.

Furthermore, you must take Augmentin exactly as directed and refrain from taking this medication more, less or more often than prescribed by your health care professional. Do not suddenly discontinue this medication without prior confirmation from your health care professional. You must also be sure to consult your health care professional pertaining to the use of Augmentin in children.

While on an ongoing course of Augmentin if you notice any of the symptoms listed below, or any other symptoms which may seem severe or persistent, you must contact your health care professional.

Sometimes, Augmentin may cause the patient to experience an excretion of dark yellow or brown urine, fever, chills, headaches, an increase in thirst, pain or difficulty while excreting urine, skin rashes, swollen joints, diarrhea, unusual bleeding or bruising and fatigue.

Furthermore, Augmentin may cause the patient to experience stomach pain or cramps, vaginal itching and a discharge, vomiting, blistering of the skin, nausea, pseudo membranous colitis, peeling of the skin, urticaria (hives) and flatulence.

Lastly, Augmentin may cause the patient to experience loosening of the skin, white patches in one’s mouth, dizziness, Agranulocytosis, anemia, back pain, dental discoloration, facial edema and redness of the skin.

If you are on an ongoing course of Augmentin, before you commence taking any new medication (either prescription or OTC), you must first consult your health care professional or pharmacist.

Furthermore, you must be sure to inform your health care professional if you are allergic to Augmentin or any other medication in any other form. Your health care professional must also be informed if you are taking any other medication in any other form, including nutritional supplements or herbal products whilst on an ongoing course of this medication.

Sometimes, Augmentin interacts with various medications, such as Methotrexate, Cephalosporin antibiotics, tetracyclines, Probenecid and Neomycin.

Furthermore, Augmentin interacts with various medications, such as Allopurinol, oral Typhoid vaccine, birth control medications, live bacterial vaccines and penicillin.

In case of an overdose of Augmentin, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Your health care professional will order certain laboratory and/or medical tests to be performed to check your response to Augmentin, monitor your progress and check for side effects. You must be sure to keep all appointments with your health care professional and the laboratory. Do not let anyone else take Augmentin and ask your health care professional or pharmacist any questions you have about refilling your prescription.

Furthermore, while on an ongoing course of Augmentin you must be sure to inform your health care professional if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to conceive. It is still unknown whether Augmentin passes into breast milk or not.

It is important that you do not take a double dose of Augmentin to make up for a missed one, unless you have consulted your health care professional.

Augmentin is also administered in cases of treatment of Periodontitis in dogs (Periodontitis is the progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth and if left untreated, can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth) and skin infections in cats. Augmentin is only administered in the treatment of bacterial infections and is ineffective in the case of viral infections, such as the common cold. Furthermore, you must speak with your health care professional about the possible risks of using Augmentin for your condition and be sure to consult your health care professional or pharmacist for more information, since this medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses.

Store the Augmentin medication in the container it came in, keep the lid tightly closed and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature (between 59 – 86 degrees F or 15 – 30 degrees C) and away from excess heat and moisture.

Furthermore, you must be sure to throw away any Augmentin medication that has gotten outdated or is no longer required. You must speak with your pharmacist or health care professional about the proper disposal of this medication.

It is important for the patient to know that before consuming Augmentin, they must inform their health care professional, if they have ever had a history of or are currently suffering from leukemia, asthma, Phenylketonuria, viral infections, liver complications, such as cholestatic Jaundice, kidney complications or Mononucleosis (a certain type of viral infection).
This medication affects the blood sugar results in the urine tests. Inform your doctor if you are diabetic.
