 |  | How to Use Bactrim
Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) is available in DS (double strength) tablet form and a liquid suspension. This medication must be taken by mouth and with a full glass of water. However, if you have an upset stomach, take Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) with food or milk. It is also necessary that you drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication in order to prevent sediments accumulating in the urine and the formation of stones. Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) works best when there is a constant amount of this medication within the blood.
Furthermore, you must be certain to carefully follow the directions on your prescription label and ask your health care professional or pharmacist to explain any part of how to take this medication that you do not understand. Furthermore, you must take Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) exactly as directed and refrain from taking a greater or lesser quantity of this medication or altogether taking this medication more or less often than prescribed by your health care professional. While on an ongoing course of Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) if you notice any of the symptoms listed below or any other symptoms which may seem severe or persistent, you must contact your health care professional.
Sometimes, Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) may cause the patient to experience anemia, fever or chills, a sore throat, body stiffness, lower back pain, myalgia, pain or difficulty excreting urine, redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin inside or outside the mouth area, skin rashes, unusual weakness, an itching sensation, hives and fatigue.
Furthermore, Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) may cause the patient to experience Stevens – Johnson’s syndrome (mild skin eruptions around the mouth, anus or eyes), partial progressive disintegration of the outer layer of the skin, vomiting, a loss of appetite, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), nausea, stomach pain, clay – colored stools, insomnia, ringing in the ears, Diuresis (an increased formation of urine by the kidney) and Myelotoxicity (mild bone marrow suppression).
Lastly, elderly patients and AIDS patients being treated for Pneumocystis Carinii and who are on an ongoing course of Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim), are more likely to experience side effects from SMX – TMP. |
 |  | Bactrim - Interactions
If you are on an ongoing course of Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) before you commence taking any new medication (either prescription or OTC), you must first consult your health care professional or pharmacist.
Furthermore, you must be sure to inform your health care professional if you are allergic to Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) or any other medication in any other form. Your health care professional must also be informed if you are taking any other medication in any other form, including nutritional supplements or herbal products whilst on an ongoing course of this medication.
Sometimes, Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) interacts with various medications, such as Dapsone, Amiloride, Digoxin, Trimetrexate, Divalproex, Cyclosporine, Dofetilide, Methenamine, Doxercalciferol, potassium salts (potassium chloride or potassium phosphate), Methotrexate, Phenytoin, Metronidazole and Procainamide.
Furthermore, Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) interacts with various medications, such as Enalapril, Lisinopril, Pyrimethamine, Rifampin, Moexipril, Quinapril, Ramipril, Spironolactone, Sulfinpyrazone, Triamterene, Benazepril, Valproic Acid and Warfarin.
Lastly, Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) interacts with various medications, such as Captopril, Fosinopril, Perindopril, Trandolapril, Amantadine, Coumadin (a blood thinner), Indomethacin, Dilantin, Elavil, Norpramin, Sinequan, Tofranil and diabetic medications. |
 |  | Bactrim - Overdose
In case of an overdose of Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim), call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
Furthermore, symptoms of an overdose of Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) may cause one to experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness and mild mood swings. |
 |  | Bactrim - Notes
Your health care professional may order certain laboratory and/or medical tests to be performed to check your response to Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim), monitor your progress and check for side effects. You must be sure to keep all appointments with your health care professional and the laboratory. It is important that you do not discontinue this medication without first consulting your health care professional. While on an ongoing course of Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim), you must also refrain from driving a car or operating any kind of machinery until you know how this medication affects you. |
 |  | Bactrim - Missed Dose
It is important that you do not take a double dose of Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) to make up for a missed one unless; you have consulted your health care professional.
Furthermore, if you are taking one dose a day of Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) and have to take a missed dose, make sure that there is a gap of at least 10 to 12 hours between both the doses.
Lastly, if you are taking two doses a day of Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) and have to take a missed dose, make sure that there is a gap of at least 5 to 6 hours between both the doses. |

Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) is also used for the effective treatment and prevention of Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia (PCP).

Store Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) in the container it came in, keep the lid tightly closed and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature (between 59 – 86 degrees F or 15 – 30 degrees C) and away from excess heat and moisture.
Furthermore, you must be sure to throw away any Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) medication that has gotten outdated or is no longer required. You must speak with your pharmacist or health care professional about the proper disposal of this medication.

It is important for the patient to know that before consuming Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim); they must inform their health care professional, if they have ever had a history of or are currently suffering from impaired kidney or liver functioning, megaloblastic anemia (a folic acid deficiency), malabsorption syndrome (abnormal intestinal absorption), severe varied allergies, bronchial asthma or Glucose – 6 – Phosphate Dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD deficiency).
Furthermore, it is important for the patient to know that while on an ongoing course of Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim); they must avoid exposing themselves to sunlight, sunlamps or tanning booths and taking any anticonvulsant medications. It is also important for the patient to use a sunscreen lotion or wear protective clothing if outdoors for prolonged intervals of time.
Lastly, caution is advised when using Bactrim (Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim) in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to its side effects, especially skin reactions and blood disorders.
