Ceftin  |  | Ceftin - DescriptionCeftin (Cefuroxime) may be described as a semi – synthetic, broad – spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic, for oral administration. You must also know that this medication is chemically similar to penicillin. However, you must also be aware that Ceftin (Cefuroxime) has been prescribed for your current condition only. Do not use this medication at a later stage for any other type of infection unless you have consulted your health care professional. To treat other types of infections a different medication besides Ceftin (Cefuroxime) may be necessary, but you must be sure to first consult your health care professional.

Ceftin (Cefuroxime) is used to help effectively treat infections, such as infections of the middle ear, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, bronchitis and pneumonia. This medication is also used to help in the effective treatment of urinary tract infections, skin infections and gonorrhea. In addition, Ceftin (Cefuroxime) is also helpful in providing result – oriented, useful effects in treating acute bacterial bronchitis in the case of patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Furthermore, Ceftin (Cefuroxime) is also used to provide effective treatment against a wide variety of bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus Pneumoniae, Haemophilus Influenzae, E. coli, N. gonorrhoeae and other varied bacterial organisms.
However, you must know that Ceftin (Cefuroxime) will not be effective in the case of viral infections, such as the common cold or flu. An unnecessary overuse of this particular medication or any other antibiotic will only lead to a decrease in effectiveness.

 |  | How to Use Ceftin
Ceftin (Cefuroxime) is available in tablet form and in different strengths of 125mg, 250mg and 500mg respectively which must be taken by mouth. However, this medication works best when taken with food. You must try to swallow Ceftin (Cefuroxime) whole and refrain from crushing or chewing this medication, since it has a strong, bitter taste. But, if you find it difficult or are unable to swallow this medication in tablet form for any other reason, you may switch to using the suspension form of this medication which is also available, but only after informing your health care professional first. You must also know that Ceftin (Cefuroxime) is not habit – forming and may be administered to children but, as a parent it is necessary for you consult your health care professional prior to administration of this medication.
Furthermore, Ceftin (Cefuroxime) is also available in the form of an oral suspension with a potency of 125 mg per 5ml teaspoon. This medication must be taken with food and shaken well just before you measure out a dose. To be sure you take the correct dose of Ceftin (Cefuroxime), measure the liquid with a marked measuring spoon or medicine cup and not with a regular table spoon. If you do not have a dose – measuring device for this medication, ask your local pharmacist to provide you with one. If you switch from using the tablet form to using the oral suspension (liquid) form of Ceftin (Cefuroxime), you may not need to use the same exact dosage (in number of milligrams). However, your health care professional will be able to guide you properly. This medication may not be as effective unless you use the exact form and strength your health care professional has prescribed for you and your particular condition.

While on an ongoing course of Ceftin (Cefuroxime) if you notice any of the symptoms listed below or any other symptoms which may seem severe or persistent, you must contact your health care professional.
Sometimes, Ceftin (Cefuroxime) may cause the patient to experience diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, mild heartburn, nausea, dizziness, an itching sensation and hives.
Furthermore, Ceftin (Cefuroxime) may cause the patient to experience minor urinary complications, fatigue, a bad taste in the mouth, swollen joints, unusual bleeding, a tingling sensation and vomiting.
Lastly, Ceftin (Cefuroxime) may cause the patient to experience headaches, skin rashes, loss of appetite, drowsiness, weakness, unusual bruising or a sore throat.

If you are on an ongoing course of Ceftin (Cefuroxime) before you commence taking any new medication (either prescription or OTC), you must first consult your health care professional or pharmacist.
Furthermore, you must be sure to inform your health care professional if you are allergic to Ceftin (Cefuroxime) or any other medication in any other form. Your health care professional must also be informed if you are taking any other medication in any other form, including nutritional supplements or herbal products whilst on an ongoing course of this medication.
Sometimes, Ceftin (Cefuroxime) interacts with various medications, such as Velosef, Cimetidine, Probenecid, Famotidine, Spectracef, Cefzil and Raniclor.
Furthermore, Ceftin (Cefuroxime) interacts with various medications, such as Keflex, Ancef, Omnicef, Warfarin, Ranitidine, Duricef and Vantin.
Lastly, Ceftin (Cefuroxime) interacts with various medications, such as Omeprazole, live vaccines, medications for heartburns or ulcers, anticoagulants, diuretics, varied antibiotics and birth control medications (the Pill).

 |  | Ceftin - Overdose
In case of an overdose of Ceftin (Cefuroxime), call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.
Furthermore, an overdose of Ceftin (Cefuroxime) may cause one to experience a mild seizure attack.

Your health care professional may order certain laboratory and/or medical tests to be performed, such as blood pressure levels, smooth functioning of the kidneys, blood electrolyte levels and blood cholesterol levels to check your response to Ceftin (Cefuroxime), monitor your progress and check for side effects. Lastly, avoid consuming alcohol and beverages containing even a small percentage of alcohol whilst on an ongoing course of Ceftin (Cefuroxime). It is important that you do not discontinue this medication without first consulting your health care professional. While on an ongoing course of Ceftin (Cefuroxime), you must also refrain from driving a car or operating any kind of machinery until you know how this medication affects you.

It is important that you do not take a double dose of Ceftin (Cefuroxime) to make up for a missed one unless you have consulted your health care professional. |

It is important for the patient to know that before consuming Ceftin (Cefuroxime); they must inform their health care professional, if they have ever had a history of or are currently suffering from kidney complications, diabetes, liver complications, intestinal complications such as colitis, stomach complications, malnourishment or varied allergies.
You must be aware that Ceftin (Cefuroxime) may cause false positive results with certain diabetic urine testing products of the cupric sulfate – type and false negative results in the case of certain blood glucose tests. You must make sure that the laboratory personnel and your health care professional are aware that you are using Ceftin (Cefuroxime).
Lastly, the oral suspension (liquid form) of Ceftin (Cefuroxime) may contain Phenylalanine. You must be certain to speak with your health care professional prior to commencing a course of this medication if you are suffering from Phenylketonuria (PKU), since Phenylalanine has adverse effects on this particular illness. Also, while on an ongoing course of Ceftin (Cefuroxime), caution is advised in the case of elderly patients, since they may be more sensitive to the effects of this medication.
