Prasugrel keeps the platelets in your blood from coagulating/clotting to help prevent unwanted blood clots which can occur with certain heart or blood vessel conditions.
Prasugrel can cause significant, sometimes fatal, bleeding. Tell your doctor if you currently have or have had a condition that causes you to bleed more easily than normal
Consult your health care professional before taking prasugrel
Do not use prasugrel with active pathological bleeding or if there is a history of transient ischemic attack or stroke
Prasugrel is not recommended in patients 75 years of age and older, because of the increased risk of fatal and intracranial bleeding and uncertain benefit. If the potential benefit outweighs the risk the physician may prescribe prasugrel
Patients likely to undergo urgent coronary artery bypass graft surgery should not be started on a course with prasugrel. If possible, discontinue prasugrel at least 7 days prior to any surgery.
While you are taking prasugrel, you will be prone to probably bruising and bleeding more easily than usual, bleed for longer than usual, and have nosebleeds. Consult your health care professional for more information
However, if you observe any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
unexplained bleeding (severe, long-lasting, or uncontrollable)
pink/brown urine
red/black tarry stools
vomit that is bloody/looks like coffee grounds
coughing up blood/blood clots
unexplained bruises that get larger
Additional risk factors for bleeding include:
body weight less than 60 kg
propensity to bleed (e.g. recent trauma, recent surgery, recent/recurrent GI bleeding, active peptic ulcer disease, or severe hepatic impairment
medications that increase the risk of bleeding (e.g. oral anticoagulants, fibrinolytic agents, chronic use of NSAIDS)
Consult your health care professional before starting on a course with prasugrel.
