Lioresal  |  | Lioresal DescriptionBaclofen (Lioresal) is used to relieve spasms, cramping and tightness of muscles caused by medical complications such as multiple sclerosis, or certain injuries to the spine.
This medication acts on the central nervous system (CNS) to produce muscle relaxant effects. Baclofen (Lioresal) does not cure these complications, but may allow other treatment such as physical therapy to be more helpful in improving your condition. This medication is also used in certain patients with trigeminal neuralgia (severe burning or stabbing pain along the nerves in the face) also called ``tic douloureux``. Furthermore, Baclofen (Lioresal) may also be described as a white to off – white, odorless or an almost completely odorless crystalline powder. A fraction of this medication dissolves in Methanol, marginally dissolves in water and does not dissolve in Chloroform at all.

Baclofen (Lioresal) may also be used to help in the treatment of Cerebral Palsy (CP) and skeletal muscle spasms caused by rheumatic disorders, flexor spasms, clonus, strokes and Parkinson’s disease. |
 |  | How to Use Lioresal
Baclofen (Lioresal) is available in tablet form in the USA and Canada. The dose of this medication is different for each patient. Usually, adults and teenagers can take five milligrams (mg) three times a day. Gradually, each dose may be increased by five milligrams (mg) every three days until the desired response is reached. However, not more than eighty milligrams (mg) of Baclofen (Lioresal) should be taken within a twenty four hour period. It is necessary that children’s dosages be prescribed by their health care professional.
While consuming Baclofen (Lioresal) it is advisable that you follow the orders of your health care professional. Do not stop this medication abruptly and consult your health care professional before discontinuing your ongoing course. Ask your health care professional to provide you with the easiest and best solution by which you may gradually reduce your intake of Baclofen (Lioresal) before stopping completely.

While on an ongoing course of Baclofen (Lioresal) if you notice any of the symptoms listed below, or any other symptoms which may seem severe or persistent, you must contact your health care professional. These side effects are more likely to occur in elderly patients, who are more sensitive than younger adults, towards the effects of this medication. Your health care professional may need to monitor you carefully for side effects and alter the doses of Baclofen (Lioresal) if necessary.
Sometimes, Baclofen (Lioresal) may also cause the patient to experience mild headaches, rashes, insomnia, euphoria, muscle pain, tinnitus, vomiting and diarrhea.
Furthermore, Baclofen (Lioresal) may also cause the patient to experience ataxia, constipation, a dry mouth, mild chest pain, anorexia, taste disorders, abdominal pain and Dysarthria (slurred speech).
Lastly, Baclofen (Lioresal) may also cause the patient to experience Dyspnea (shortness of breath), palpitations, nausea, Pruritus (an itching sensation), excessive perspiration, weight gain and nasal congestion. |

Baclofen (Lioresal) interacts with various medications, such as Nardil, Parnate, Elavil, Asendin, Anafranil, Pertofrane, Sinequan, Tofranil, Aventyl, Vivactil and Surmontil.
Furthermore, Baclofen (Lioresal) interacts with various other medications that may cause drowsiness, medications for the common cold, hay fever and varied allergies.
Lastly, Baclofen (Lioresal) may also interact with different types of foods, preservatives and dyes.

While on an ongoing course of Baclofen (Lioresal) you must not miss any scheduled appointments with your health care professional. You must be sure not to share your medication with anyone.

If you miss a dose of Baclofen (Lioresal) and you remember within an hour or so of the missed dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if you do not remember until later, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose of this medication. |

Baclofen (Lioresal) should be stored in the container it came in, and you need to make doubly sure that the container remains tightly closed and out of reach of children when not in use. This medication should be stored at room temperature and away from places such as the bathroom, near the kitchen sink or in other damp places where it could experience excess heat and moisture. It is necessary for you to know that an excess of heat or moisture may cause the components of Baclofen (Lioresal) to break down. When this medication is not in use or has become outdated, you must discard it with the guidance of your health care professional or pharmacist and use the right technique to dispose of this medication properly |

It is necessary that you inform your health care professional if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reactions to this medication. You must be certain of how you react to Baclofen (Lioresal) and make sure that you consult your health care professional before you drive, operate machinery or undertake any kind of activity that could prove to be dangerous if you are not alert, well coordinated, focused and able to see well.
Furthermore, if you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant, or are breast – feeding then inform your health care professional before you begin a course of Baclofen (Lioresal). However, if you become pregnant while on an ongoing course of this medication, call your health care professional immediately. It is also necessary for you to know that this medication passes into breast milk but, has not been reported to cause problems for nursing babies.
Lastly, it is very important for the patient to know that before consuming Baclofen (Lioresal) they must inform their health care professional if they have ever had a history of, or are currently suffering from, strokes, diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, kidney complications or emotional stress. |
