Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) may be described as a diuretic or water pill that helps prevent one’s body from absorbing too much salt, hence causing fluid retention. This medication is also used to help considerably decrease swollen arms or legs and swellings found within the stomach or abdomen.

Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) is available in tablet form, which must be taken by mouth, usually swallowed whole with a glass of water and may be taken with or without food. However, you must be certain to take this medication exactly as directed, making sure to follow the directions on the prescription label carefully and ask your health care professional or pharmacist to explain any part of Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) you do not understand. Special care may be required pertaining to the use of this medication in children.

Lastly, Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) may cause the patient to experience nausea, swellings of the face, tongue or throat, vomiting, unusual drowsiness, a persistent sore throat, low fever, disorientation, joint pain and unusual changes in the amounts of urine excreted.

If you are on an ongoing course of Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) before you commence taking any new medication (either prescription or OTC), you must first consult your health care professional or pharmacist.

Furthermore, Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) interacts with various medications, such as Cortisone, Prednisone, Lithium, Pseudoephedrine, Amphotericin B, Ibuprofen, Naproxen, Colestipol and Diaz oxide.

Lastly, Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) interacts with various diabetic medications, medications used for varied heart complications and calcium supplements.

In case of an overdose of Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide), call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Furthermore, symptoms of an overdose of Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) may cause one to experience dizziness, slow or shallow breathing, fainting spells, severe weakness, myalgia and a substantial decrease in the amount of urine excreted.

Store Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) in the container it came in, keep the lid tightly closed and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature (between 59 – 86 degrees F or 15 – 30 degrees C) and away from excess heat and moisture.

Furthermore, it is also important for the patient to know that before consuming Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide); they must inform their health care professional, if they have ever had a history of or are currently suffering from dehydration, high levels of fats in the blood (high cholesterol or triglycerides), parathyroid complications or sympathectomy (a nerve surgery).

Lastly, while on an ongoing course of Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) avoid prolonged exposure towards sunshine, tanning booths and sunlamps. This medication may increase your sensitivity towards sunlight, hence use a sunscreen lotion and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Elderly patients may be more sensitive towards the effects of this medication and may especially be more prone to dizziness. Inform your health care professional if you are a diabetic patient and be sure to keep a close check on blood and urine sugar levels, since Microzide (Hydrochlorothiazide) increases the amount of sugar within the blood or urine.
