Misoprostol

Do not take misoprostol to prevent ulcers if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Misoprostol may cause miscarriages, premature labor, or birth defects. If you are a woman of childbearing age, you may take misoprostol to prevent ulcers only if you have had a negative pregnancy test in the past 2 weeks and if you use a reliable method of birth control while taking misoprostol. You must begin taking misoprostol on the second or third day of your menstrual period. If you become pregnant while taking misoprostol, stop taking it and call your doctor immediately.Before taking misoprostol, ask your pharmacist or doctor for a copy of the manufacturer's information for the patient and read it carefully. Talk to your doctor about the risks of taking misoprostol.Do not let anyone else take your medication, especially a woman who is or may become pregnant.

Take misoprostol tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Take your doses at regular intervals; this medication is usually taken with meals and at bedtime with food. Taking this medication with food reduces the chance of diarrhea or stomach upset. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

SIDE EFFECTS, that may go away during treatment, include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, gas, headache, vomiting, and constipation. If they continue and are bothersome, check with your doctor. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience menstrual irregularities or unusual/heavy vaginal bleeding. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include sleepiness, tremors, seizures, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, diarrhea, fever, and slow heart rate.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

You can take antacids for the occasional relief of pain unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you otherwise.

If you are female, You should not use this drug to prevent stomach ulcers if you are pregnant. Females should avoid pregnancy while taking this medication and for at least one month (one full menstrual cycle) after discontinuing this medication. Misoprostol can cause contractions of the uterus that may cause abortion or the medication may harm an unborn baby. You should use a reliable form of birth control while taking misoprostol; talk to your health care provider about birth control options. If you become pregnant, think you are pregnant, or want to become pregnant during misoprostol treatment, stop taking this drug immediately and contact your health care provider for advice.
