Nexium (Esomeprazole) may be described as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI).

Furthermore, Nexium (Esomeprazole) is also used to help effectively reduce the chances of gastric ulcer formation within patients using a group of medicines called NSAIDs. Patients who are 60 years of age or older and patients who have a history of gastric ulcer formation, are more susceptible to the formation of gastric ulcers than patients without this particular complication.

Lastly, Nexium (Esomeprazole) is also used in conjunction with various other antibiotics to effectively reduce and treat ulcer formations associated with certain infections caused by the H. pylori bacteria.
How to Use Nexium

Nexium (Esomeprazole) is available in capsule form, which must be taken by mouth, usually swallowed whole with a glass of water. It may be taken once every day, at least one hour prior to a meal or as directed by your health care professional. Swallow the capsule whole. Be sure that you do not crush, break or chew the capsule. However, if you are unable to swallow the capsule whole, open the capsules and sprinkle the contents on one tablespoonful of applesauce or yogurt and swallow the same immediately. You may also mix the granules within the Nexium (Esomeprazole) capsule with some water or fruit juice and down the solution immediately. You must be sure that the applesauce is not hot and the juices you can use to dissolve the granules include apple juice or orange juice. While taking this medication in the granule form, you must also be certain not chew or crush the granules. You must be sure to follow the directions on the prescription label carefully and ask your health care professional or pharmacist to explain any part of Nexium (Esomeprazole) you do not understand. Special care may be required pertaining to the use of this medication in children.

Furthermore, you must also be sure to take Nexium (Esomeprazole) exactly as directed and refrain from taking a greater or lesser quantity of this medication or altogether taking this medication more or less often than prescribed by your health care professional.
