Nevirapine can cause severe, life-threatening liver damage, skin reactions, and allergic reactions. Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease, especially hepatitis B or C. Nevirapine is in a class of medications called non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs).

Take nevirapine tablets by mouth, swallow with a drink of water. You may take nevirapine with or without food.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. inform your doctor as soon as possible if you suffer Liver damage, rash, Abdominal pain, allergic reactions (including hives, blisters, mouth sores, or swollen mouth and throat), diarrhea, drowsiness, drug withdrawal, fat redistribution, fatigue, fever, headache, joint pain, muscle aches, nausea, tingling, vomiting.

Tell your doctor & pharmacist if you are allergic to nevirapine or any other medications.
Cimetidine (Tagamet)
Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
Macrolide antibiotics such as Biaxin, Dynabac, Ery-Tab, ERYC, Tao, and Zithromax
Methadone (Dolophine)
Rifabutin (Mycobutin)
Rifampin (Rifadin, Rimactane)
St. John's Wort

Nevirapine may interfere with the action of oral contraceptives. Talk to your doctor about other methods of birth control that will work for you.

In case of overdose, call your local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If the victim has collapsed or is not breathing, call local emergency services at 911.

Nevirapine does not prevent the spread of HIV to other people. Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor will order certain tests to check your body's response to nevirapine, especially during the first 18 weeks of your treatment.

Avoid breastfeeding. HIV can be passed to a nursing infant through breast milk.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

Nevirapine is used in combination with other medications to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in patients with or without acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F).

To avoid development of resistance, be careful to take your other HIV drugs as well. Severe liver reactions or skin rashes may be seen with nevirapine therapy. Use a condom and be careful of cuts, abrasions and other sources of blood contact.
